WHEN DID EVERYTHING START LOOKING LIKE AN AD?
Grain, moody tones, pastel colour palettes. It's all starting to look the same. Is the world simply in sync, or have we become too afraid to be the one who looks different? Fitting in has never felt more intentional, while authenticity has become a privilege.
The real question is, if everyone wants to stand out, why does everything look the same?
The Rise of the Safe Aesthetic
We see something work, save it, recreate it and eventually, everyone is doing it. A particular colour palette becomes the visual language of a category. A certain typography style suddenly feels premium. A particular kind of reel becomes the formula for looking aspirational.
It makes sense when something that has worked before feels safe. But when safe becomes the default, where does originality go?
Are We Creating or Just Recognising?
We have more access to inspiration than ever before.
Pinterest, Behance, Instagram, TikTok. A world of references is sitting just a scroll away. Yet somehow, the more we consume, the more familiar everything feels.
Maybe because inspiration is no longer just something we discover. But something we constantly compare ourselves against. We start creating what already feels right, because we know what right looks like.
And perhaps that's where the problem begins.
Then there is the algorithm.
The algorithm knows what works. It rewards what people already understand, engage with and recognise. So we learn what performs and naturally start creating more of it.
The result is a loop of trend! The audience sees something familiar, the brand sees it perform, the creative sees it as a reference.
And suddenly, familiar becomes the benchmark for good. But creativity was never meant to be a benchmark. It was meant to be a point of view.
Maybe Perfect Isn't Memorable
The brands we remember aren't always the ones with the most beautiful feeds. They have a personality.
A distinct voice, recognisable attitude and something that feels unmistakably theirs. Because being polished can make a brand look good. Being distinctive makes it memorable, and perhaps that's the question creatives should be asking more often.
Not just, "Does this look good?" But, "Does this feel like us?"
So, What Does Different Look Like?
Different doesn't necessarily mean loud.
It doesn't mean breaking every rule or creating something strange just to be noticed. Sometimes, it simply means making a choice that feels true to the brand, even when it isn't the choice everyone else is making.
Because today, almost everyone has access to the same tools, references, trends and technology. The real advantage may lie in what you choose to do differently with them.
Maybe the next wave of creativity isn't about finding a new aesthetic. Maybe it's about finding the courage to have your own.
So, when everything starts looking the same, perhaps the boldest creative decision is simply to look like yourself.
